Tandems & Trailercycles

A posting on T@H  January 02, 2002 by John Schubert author of The Tandem Scoop.

 Rick,

If you like the trailercycle, you'll love the tandem.

We spend thousands of dollars to make our tandems stiff, and a trailercycle is like a tandem with a hinge in the middle.  Go figure.

When our family was  in tandem-plus-single-bike-with-trailercycle mode, my wife would derisively refer to the trailercycle as the Wendy Bendy and demand to captain the tandem.  ("YOU can ride the Wendy Bendy.")  And whenever there was a steep descent, she'd get a quarter mile ahead of me, because the tandem handles so much better.

All that said, I think trailercycles are a great thing.  They're an inexpensive way to get about 51 percent of what riding a tandem with your kid can deliver.
