| 1. WILL MY BIKE ACCEPT A DISC BRAKE? Your frame or dropout must have a disc brake mount, either a Hayes mount welded to the left chainstay (used by Santana since ~1999) or one of the various I.S. (International Standard) mounts that have two holes with NO threads, exactly 51mm apart, that 6mm bolts will pass straight through. These I.S. mounts may be integral to the dropout, part of the seatstay, or welded to the left chainstay. Trek made a frame that is an exception in ~2004 that requires a special I.S. adapter mount. Fender and rack eyelets with threads do NOT work. Neither will an Arai drum brake hook located below the left chainstay. Please do not call and ask if they will work. Your frame must be designed to accept a disc brake and if it was made during this century it more than likely will have the needed provisions. |

| 2. WHICH BRAKE? Avid, Winzip, or Bengal? PERFORMANCE: From Bike Forums [Edited for bevity]: We just returned from a Santana tour of the Sarone / Rhone river area of France. In addition to an exceptional tour the opportunity to ride Mt Ventoux was presented. Initially about 50 tandem teams expressed interest although after a week of riding and a better description of the mountain only 15 teams did the ride with 13 completing all of it. Mt Ventoux is one of the classic beyond category climbs in France with about 5400 ft of climbing in 14 miles with not a single foot of level road. The grade averages 6% with some extended pitches at 10%. Every brand of disc brake had issues except one. The Avids all melted the inner adjustment ring which is what we have on our Calfee, the Winzips all went thru a complete set of pads before the bottom. It did not matter what your descending style was they all had problems except the Bengal calipers, now on Santanas. |

Bike Forums [Edited for bevity]: We
just completed Cycle Oregon with our Bengal disc brake installed on our
Calfee. This was the first true test for the brake following our Avid brake
issues on Mt Ventoux. On day 6 we did get to test the brake with a steep
2400ft descent on rough chip seal road. The descent had many sharp turns with
a few switchbacks on a bad surface. The Bengal brake worked as hoped with
good braking and no melted parts. It did get noisy as it heated up as high
speed was definitely not advised for the first few miles of the descent. The
Avid users I talked to also had the noisy distraction. I would rate the
braking as about the same with both systems so I am pleased that the heat
issues are not a concern with the Bengal brake. Our max speed for the descent
was 45 mph. FUNCTION AND OTHER CONSIDERATIIONS: The current popular choices for tandem use are the Bengal or the Avid. In addition to having no plastic parts to melt, the Bengal works with any brake lever and comes with a built in adjusting barrel for a clean installation. |

SIZE MATTERS, BUT WHICH ONE? 200-203mm (8") or 254mm (10") Brakes smaller than 200mm are not acceptable for tandem use. 200mm in the Avid world has replaced the 203mm -- consider them one and the same. NON-SANTANA TANDEMS: Nearly all will modern tandems will accept the 200-203mm (8") as the maximum size. 10" disc brakes only fit Santanas or a custom designed tandem. SANTANA TANDEMS: A 10" disc brake will fit any ~1999 and newer model. If you have a 2004 or older Santana you have the choice of either an 8" or 10" brake kit. 2005 and newer Santanas accept a 10" brake only. |

| 4. KIT PRICES, INCLUSIONS, AND PITFALLS OF
PIECE-MEALING Our well thought out kits include everything needed from the brake lever to the hub. We even include a spare set of brake pads, too. You supply the brake lever and the hub, of course, the rest of the bike also. Said tongue-in-cheek but you would be amazed at the number of calls asking if the lever and hub are included, too! Even though some unknowns may surface at times, our kits and our support / experience will get you going as correctly as possible. As you may suspect, we have helped many sift through their remaining needs and incompatiblity issues after failed attempts at sourcing the proper and needed bargain basement piece-meal items that resorted in frustration, a non working brake, lost time, and a greater end cost. Getting started right prevents needless time delays and multiple shipping charges. There is no upcharge or additional costs for our "Kits", as may first appear. When a surfer orders a single needed disc brake item, or two, listed for XX dollars, they usually learn later that their efforts fall short of getting what really works.
